100 years ago, Master Jiro Murai experienced the essence of Jin Shin Jyutsu. He then spent the rest of life researching and teaching this "Art". This year, we honor his life's work through our own awareness and understanding of Jin Shin Jyutsu. And by doing so, we honor Mary Burmeister for her selfless devotion to his legacy. The classes scheduled during this time will delve deeply into this essence. We'll move beyond techniques to listen to "The Breath" of Jin Shin Jyutsu.

"The journey of Jin Shin Jyutsu is a journey to Know (Help) Myself and by learning to help myself, I can learn to help others. The programs being offered this year are designed to thoroughly examine the fundamental principles of Jin Shin Jyutsu, like understanding the Breath. The texture and rhythm of our breath reflects the integrity, the wholeness, of who we are. Do we know how to completely let go of everything in this moment to completely receive everything in this moment? The answers to that question reflect the richness of Jin Shin Jyutsu and the legacy of Master Jiro Murai and Mary Burmeister."
Michael Wenninger, Instructor, Jin Shin Jyutsu

"Sometimes life can be incredibly demanding. Sometimes we feel life is asking too much from us and we don't know how to respond. As I do my daily practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu, there is a calming and a slowing down as I remember my practice of Being the breath. This practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu nourishes me and sustains me through the day."

Body Reading: The Art of Awareness and Understanding
Body bodying is an Art form of Jin Shin Jyutsu. An Art that doesn't rely on techniques or projects, but a practice that reveals the fundamental principles of energy movement within the body. Through practice and study, awareness and understanding, body reading becomes a sacred ritual of discovery.
The class will move between lecture of principles in Text 1 and Text 2, demonstration of the principles through multiple examples of body reading and the practicum of hands-on.

Uzi & Cynthia Broshi.JPG

What a delightful moment when Cynthia's drawings emerged in their fullness on the board - the worlds within worlds of knowledge spiralling and pulsating in almost three dimensional clarity! Our class time was a boundless mix of revelations as students grappled with the complexitiy of this ancient art and felt the simplicity of it within our bodies. Time and tensions melted into a deep knowing at our fingertips. One student commented that she will be back every year as this was not only the most profound treat of information but an inspiring retreat into the formless expereince of creator energy. What a blessing to have deepened our awareness of Jin Shin Jyutsu as a daily practice as we approach another year of radical transformation.

With thanks to all the students who made this class possible and continue to spread the practice of this most precious art.

with special thanks to Uzi, Cynthia's husband, for his presence, fun, love and support - watching students return from a session with him during class and feeling how this was deepening the expereince for all of us, was very moving. "this is what is was like in class with Mary" Cynthia told us "with students receiving sessions and learning at the deepest level".

AND A DEEPLY APPRECITIVE THANKS for all the extra time and energy that Cynthia and Uzi gave to the expansion of JSJ into new communities and their ongoing commitment to work with us to grow and energize our South African Jin Shin Jyutsu community.

I can still feel the glow of their smiles and the powerful touch we each shared together. May we come together in 2012 again, to enrich ourselves and harmonize our earth in communal practice and learning.

JIN SHIN JYUTSU Mission Statement:
Through the dynamic Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu (Physio-Philosophy), our mission IS to create a safe environment for reawakening the true SELF. Being the testimony of this simple, profound Art of Living, made known to us by Mary Burmeister and Jiro Murai, we educate, harmonize and inspire ourselves and others through integrity, compassion, trust and freedom to BE.....NOW KNOW MYSELF.

Reading a recent funding request for a SELF HELP WORKSHOP, I was deeply moved by the testimony given by MaThandi, and inspired and dynamic woman from Vukani-Tsohang Africa, a womens and youth project in Sebokeng. I thank her for allowing me to share, with you, her story:

"Vukani-Tsohang Africa is a womens and youth project focusing on skills transfer, poverty alleviation and workshop for youth with special needs and disability. The project also runs workshops and dialogues weekly on domestic violence, human rights, basic services and on any issue suggested by the community. We have been using Tai chi and capacitor as one of the methodologies in order to keep people centred and present in the room. This also helps women and youth deal with the pain they have carried in their bodies sometimes for years, and enables them to be present in the room.

I also benefited and managed to regain my health after I met Michel in the Gender at Work action learning process who taught me JSJ self help. I had water retention .....

There is a podcast by David Burmeister which can be accessed from the home page of the JSJ site - www.jsjinc.net. It's a simple overview of this wonderful art. Very useful for those of us who are new to JSJ and sometimes don't quite know how to explain it when friends ask.

FATIGUE?

|

"We need never know FATIGUE. Energy can never TIRE. It is our PERSONAL imbalance that causes fatigue. When our 26 "safety" Energy Locks are unlocked, we are in a state of ECSTASY - the SECRET of the fountain of youth, available equally to all eternally - that which was, is and shall be, IS. The MASTER KEY is our degree of desire and trust, the KNOWING. The SIMPLE reason for perfect health and happiness is being master of anything we do - love it - regardless of what it is - menial, boring or inspirational work. There should be no person or thing one dislikes - as hatred develops imbalance that causes Fatigue. HAPPINESS is an indication of our HARMONY. We are all created equally. We have TWO HANDS as our REJUVENATORS and HARMONIZERS. With these two hands we have the privilege of helping ourselves and others get in tune with the universe. Hands are our generators of the Creator Power - not from within us, but a part of the ever-constant and forever balanced universal SUPPLY. We need only be AWARE of that supply."

Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-philosophy and finding peace of mind in these accelerating times of change.
BY NAN HAMILTON

One of my meditation teachers once said to me that when we first incarnated the mind was given to us as a tool. And over many incarnations and lifetimes it has become our master. I began questioning: Am I my mind? How does the ego-mind trap my Soul? How can I go beyond the ego-mind? What am I beyond the ego? How do I create a more balanced state of consciousness, a peace of mind? What is consciousness?

These are questions that I have asked for some years now and in searching for answers have discovered, amongst other great works and practices, Eckhart Tolle's 'New Earth', Mayan predictions by several authors/ interpreters, and key for my evolution the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu. I will share with you some thoughts that attempt to answer some of these questionings and specifically how Jin Shin Jyutsu offers me a practice to explore stepping out of the separateness of the ego-mind into an awareness of hidden harmony, that sacredness that realigns one with the wholeness of life and our conscious participation in the creation of life. That simple KNOW MYSELF Be it is, is.

I begin with an email article by Simone Butler:

Jin Shin Jyutsu ® physio-philosophy is an ancient art of harmonizing the life energy in the body. Said to predate Buddha and Moses and passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, the Art had fallen into relative obscurity when it was dramatically revived in the early 1900s by Master Jiro Murai in Japan.
After clearing himself of a life-threatening illness, Master Murai devoted the rest of his life to the research and development of Jin Shin Jyutsu, gathering insight from a range of experiences and resources. He believed that the capacity to use this Art is born in all of us, like our hands, the tools with which it is applied.
The resulting knowledge of Jin Shin Jyutsu was then given to Mary Burmeister, who introduced it in the USA in the 1950s. Mary Burmeister began teaching the Art to others in the early 1960s, and today there are thousands of students around the world.

Thumbnail image for pat aikin.jpgPat Aiken, now 88 years old was the first person to teach the 5 day seminar in South Africa in 1994. Pat worked and lived on and off in South Africa between 1991 and 1997. Pat used to treat many clients a day and in between that she taught Self Help courses and the 5 day seminars. She did radio interviews and inspired many of us to maintain a daily Self Help practice.

It is truly thanks to her that JSJ has such a strong presence in South Africa. As one of those incredibly lucky students to have been blessed with the opportunity to have experienced Pat's passion, commitment and love for this remarkable Art, not to forget her wonderful treatments, I decided to interview Pat for the new South African JSJ website. Here I wish to both honour her memory and role in JSJ South Africa and also to share with newer students her insights and wisdom. Pat still treats a number of clients a week as well as drawing and making sculptures. She is an Artist on many levels.
With deep gratitude to you Pat, Michel Friedman.

"The truth is that within each one of us lies the power to cast all misery aside and to KNOW complete Peace and Oneness - to BE that beautiful creation of perfect harmony - to truly know (help) Myself."
Mary Burmeister

Introduction

Have you ever felt your body as 'fluid' rather than as a solid block? Have you felt it tingle inside - when you know every cell to be alive and vibrant? Have you ever wondered at the supposed mystery of how 'healers' or body workers can listen to your body and reflect back to you that core essential thought you are currently preoccupied with? Much to my surprise, when I first came across Jin Shin Jyutsu I discovered that these seeming mysteries which I was sure only special, gifted people could make happen, are available to each one of us. All we need is our awareness, our willingness to listen and our hands. Yes, it is this simple - and yet so profound at the same time.

The Main Central Vertical Flow is the source of our life energy. This pathway runs down the center of the front of the body and back up the spine. Here is a Jin Shin Jyutsu® self-help process to harmonize this pathway.

What Mary Says...

|

"My mind is open, wherever I am, I am simply beginning. Thank you, God, Thank you." These words from What Mary Says... provided the ceremonial tone to a special service held for her at Hakubai Temple, 2 February 2008, in Boulder, Colorado. Led by my teacher, Hakubai Zenji (Martin Mosko), the sangha and I chanted the Heart of Great Perfect Wisdom Sutra, offered incense, performed prostrations and honored her in our hearts. I made a presentation of her embodiment of Jin Shin Jyutsu and her magnificent enlightenment that touched so many lives. We concluded our service by adding her name to our lineage. Starting with Sakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, the names of all Buddhist teachers in our lineage were recited. Her name was the 89th name announced in an unbroken lineage extending beyond 2,500 years of compassionate teaching from India to China and Japan to the United States. As the 89th teacher, Mary is, "Perfect balance...As above, so below."

Deep bows, HakuZan Dai∙E

maryAbout1.jpgArticle published in the March/April 1988 issue of Yoga Journal

The tiny, energetic woman placed one of my hands in hers, grasping my forefinger firmly but not tightly. Her eyes sparkled as she looked into mine and said, "See? Isn't that simple?" Miraculously, the tension of months of work disappeared. It was Jin Shin Jyutsu® in action, she explained.

Categorizing Jin Shin Jyutsu can be as difficult as pigeonholing its one-woman leading force, Mary Burmeister. More than a style of bodywork, it's a philosophy of life taught by a master who lives her philosophy.

Burmeister describes Jin Shin Jyutsu (which means "art of the Creator through compassionate man" in Japanese) as a "physio-philosophy" that is used by everyone unconsciously, doesn't "do" anything, yet encompasses everything. "I call it the art of life, the art of life itself. It is the whole cosmos and cannot be categorized," Burmeister explains.
